Do you need to know how to swim to go canyoning?

It depends on the canyon chosen, but in most cases, yes. You need to be at least comfortable in the water for the green and yellow routes. However, for the other routes, you must be able to swim as they involve swimming in natural pools, even though a wetsuit will help you float.

If you have a slight apprehension about water, please do not hesitate to tell us before booking. We can then advise you on the most suitable canyon for your level and comfort.
How to equip yourself properly for a canyoning trip?

Hydrogène Sports provides all the necessary technical equipment: wetsuit, neoprene socks, helmet, harness, and safety equipment.
You just need to provide:
a pair of closed shoes, trainer-style, with a good sole (not water shoes),
a swimsuit,
a towel,
A bottle of water for after the activity.
According to the weather, also consider taking a change of clothes.

Do you need to be very athletic to go canyoning?

No. The majority of our routes are accessible to people in good physical condition, without needing to be particularly athletic.

Canyoning mainly involves walking, swimming, negotiating a few natural obstacles and, occasionally, jumping (which is always optional on our family routes).

Our team will help you choose the canyon that best suits your age, fitness level, and desires.
How many people per group?

The size of the groups is often fixed by Order municipal and varies between 10 and 12 people according to The routes. Depending on the chosen route, groups are deliberately limited. For certain experiences, particularly our «PERF Canyon» route, we accommodate a maximum of 6 to 7 participants so that each person receives personalised advice and high-quality support.
Is canyoning dangerous?

As with any outdoor activity, canyoning involves inherent risks. That's why each outing is supervised by a state-qualified instructor who adapts the route to the conditions at the time, the group's level, and everyone's abilities.
Before each departure, a comprehensive briefing is conducted and all safety equipment is provided.
By following the guide's instructions, canyoning remains an accessible activity and can be practised safely.
How is safety ensured during the excursion?

Your safety is our priority.
Our qualified instructors check the weather conditions, water levels, and course conditions before each departure.
During the outing, they will explain the progression techniques, secure the tricky sections and adapt the pace to the group.
All materials provided comply with current standards and are subject to regular checks.
What should I do if I have a health problem or injury?

Before you leave, it is Mandatory to report any injury, physical limitation, pregnancy or health problem that might affect your participation.
This information allows us to assess with you whether the activity is suitable or if it would be better to suggest an alternative course of action.

Can I participate if I'm on medical treatment?

It depends on the treatment concerned.

What happens if the weather conditions aren't good?
I feel dizzy, are the jumps compulsory?

On most of our routes, jumps are optional andWhen possible, your guide will offer an alternative way to get around the obstacle. In general, jumps are replaced by abseils, which can be mandatory on certain canyons.

We take the time to support each person so you can fully enjoy your outing, without any pressure.

Which canyon should I choose for a first experience?

It all depends on your age, fitness level and what you're looking for.

Would you like to discover canyoning as a family? Do you prefer a fun outing with plenty of optional jumps? Or a more sporty experience?

At Hydrogène Sports, the youngest can discover canyoning from the age of 6 on certain specially adapted routes.
Each canyon has a minimum age which depends on its characteristics (height of obstacles, duration, technicality...).
You will find this information on each canyon sheet.
What family-friendly activities can you do around Annecy?

Canyoning is one of the most original experiences for discovering the mountains in a different way. Depending on your children's ages, you can also try tandem paragliding, hiking, cycling, paddleboarding, or enjoy the beaches of Lake Annecy.
If you are staying for several days in the region, our team will also be able to advise you on additional activities based on your preferences.
What is the water temperature?

The water temperature varies depending on the canyon, altitude, and time of year. In Haute-Savoie, it is generally between 12 and 20°C depending on the canyon.
Rest assured: we provide a full neoprene wetsuit and neoprene socks to quickly limit the feeling of cold. After a few minutes, the majority of participants feel perfectly comfortable and fully enjoy the outing, even in summer.
How long does canyoning last?

The duration depends on the canyon chosen.
On average, you should allow about 3 hours between your arrival at the meeting point and the end of the activity. This time includes:
– the welcome and the equipment,
– the security briefing,
– the approach march,
– the canyon descent,
– the return to the starting point.

The duration of the descent itself varies depending on the route and the group's pace.
Can you take a phone?
Is canyoning accessible to people who are afraid of water?

That depends on your level of understanding.

If you're simply impressed by the water or lacking in confidence, certain routes are particularly well-suited for discovering the activity gently.

Our instructors take the time to support you, explain each step, and build your confidence. As jumps are often optional, everyone progresses at their own pace.

On the other hand, if your fear is very significant or prevents you from moving forward in the water, canyoning may not be the most suitable activity.

Is there a weight restriction for canyoning?
I don't have any transport, how can I get to the canyoning?

The Purple Canyon (Angon at Talloires) is accessible by bus from Annecy train station on line 20. You can also come by bike, for example by renting from our friends and partners at « Instant Outdoor »" in Annecy-le-Vieux. You’ll receive a 10 % discount on any bike hire upon presentation of your canyoning booking email from us. Simply follow the cycle path along the shores of Lake Annecy, which passes in front of the car park where the Canyon Violet meeting point is located.

For the other canyons, accessibility by bus is not optimal and by bike, it will require more commitment. The meeting points are available on each canyon's details page.

Some invaluable advice…

FOR YOUR COMFORT

Think about going to the «little place» before putting on your suit!
If you have the Long hair, tie it back. This will prevent them from catching or wrapping around a wide variety of objects, which can be very problematic.
If you wear glasses, you can keep them in the canyon. If a jump presents itself (jumps are never mandatory), you will simply need to put them in your suit and put them back on immediately after jumping.

FOR YOUR SAFETY

Wear closed-toe shoes with good grip, like sports shoes.
Always follow the monitor's instructions to safely overcome the obstacles.
Never venture near a waterfall without being secured by a rope.
Please stay on the path to preserve wildlife and flora, and use the most appropriate crossing points.
Think about eating before you go out to make the most of your day.

Questions relating to paragliding

Do you need to have already been paragliding?
From what age can you fly?
Is there a minimum or maximum weight?
I'm feeling dizzy, can I fly?
How does a paragliding flight take place?

Example for an appointment at 2 p.m. for a scenic flight with photos/videos

IMPORTANT: Depending on the weather conditions, the instructor may need to change the meeting point or potentially cancel the flight for safety reasons.

1 – 2:00 PM: Welcome from the two-seater paragliding instructor

Allow 15 minutes extra. Appointments are most often at the landing site (very rarely at the take-off site). The time given to you is the latest time you must arrive at the meeting point. From there, we will go up to the take-off site, which takes about 20 to 30 minutes.

2 – 2:30 PM: Equipment and briefing

Once on the takeoff, your instructor will equip you with a harness and a helmet. They will carry out the usual checks on the paraglider (untangling the lines, checking the reserve parachute, etc.).
Then, he will give you the instructions to follow for take-off.

3 – 14:35: Paragliding flight

Here we are, it's time to treat yourself by discovering unique landscapes from the air. You'll see for yourself that there's no «vertigo» in paragliding and if you had any apprehension, it will disappear in no time at all! Also, know that the instructor is there for you and if you wish to shorten your flight because you're not comfortable, that's entirely possible. Likewise, if you wish to do some acrobatics, you can ask them if the flight conditions allow it.

Your instructor is also a paragliding specialist and knows the region well, so they will be delighted to explain why it flies, how to fly, the names of the surrounding mountains, and depending on the flying conditions, they may even offer you the chance to fly yourself by giving you your first piloting lesson.

4 – 15:00: Once placed

The instructor will retrieve the provided equipment and will send you photos and videos of your flight, which you can watch, rewatch, and re-rewatch again and again!!!! And you'll go home with a huge grin on your face, proud of yourself for pushing your limits, with stars in your eyes, and the urge to do it all over again straight away!

A few tips before you take flight..

Good to equip oneself

A light jacket is recommended, even in summer.
